5 Steps to Creating Your Own Rube Goldberg Machine

1. Decide on an end goal.

A popular task is a balloon pop. My students are working on a machine that will roll a foam die. The possibilities are endless.

A Rube Goldberg machine is a contraption, invention, device, or apparatus that is deliberately over-engineered to perform a simple task in a complicated fashion, generally including a chain reaction. The expression is named after American cartoonist and inventor Rube Goldberg (1883–1970).

2. Be resourceful.

One of the thoughts that can be the most daunting as you begin is, “What materials do I use?” The answer is simple. Use what you have, and figure it out as you go.

3. Start simple.

Once you get the basics down, combine elements and go for more intricate arrangements.

3. F.A.I.L.= First Attempt in Learning.

Of course, things don’t always go as planned! However, if at first you don’t succeed…try…try again!

5. Celebrate your success.
